Project Husband

Anyone who's been reading 27 Dresses for a while now knows about my documented crush on Matt Lauer. Which means I obviously watch the Today Show.

And I felt slightly less pathetic about my own romantic life after watching a segment last week about a woman who's launched something called Project Husband 2011.

Essentially, she has set a wedding date (February of next year) and has begun making all of the arrangements for her pending nuptials. The only catch?

She doesn't have a groom. (Read more about it here.)

Now, I'm all about ladies being proactive with their dating lives and going after what they want. But planning a wedding before you even have a GROOM? That tells me you're either totally desperate or totally looking for publicity. Or both.

(In which case, this little public relations ploy would probably make even the likes of PR-hungry Kate Gosselin jealous, no?)

What do you think? Is Project Husband pathetic or proactive?

pathetic, i mean what happens if she doesn't meet anyone, she just planned for a whole wedding and nothing?

it just doesn't make sense.

i'm all up for a good marketing/publicity stunt but that's about all this one sounds like to me.

That seems a little coo coo to me! And also screams of a publicity stunt. The scary thing is she'll probaby find one!

Wow that is just crazy and absurd!!!!!! I don't think anyone who does that would find a groom after they find out what shes up to!

as a wedding planner, it makes me cringe. weddings should be about couples, celebrating a life long marriage. even if she finds a groom by then, the wedding won't reflect him, nor them together.

No more crazy than the Bachelor or Bachelorette show....good luck to her. One has to go to

Strange. I also think it's strange when I'm watching Say Yes to Dress and they buy a dress without a wedding date.

I know, I also think it's disturbing that I watch that show.

Alexa -- Agree! Tho I'd still go to the reception! ;)

Carolina -- At what point during your date do you tell the guy about Project Husband, right?

Mrs. Lopez -- Totes McGotes

Heidzilla -- Excellent point. Didn't even think of that.

Respectfully -- But at least on The Bachelor they know who they're marrying before planning the wedding! :)

Allison -- Um, when blogfamily was in Europe in 1998, blogdad wanted me to buy a wedding dress in Paris just to say my dress was from Paris. I didn't even have a BF at the time. LOL.

being too crazy about a marriage with a non-existent person seems like a great way to project your values onto someone else and stay alone, or project your values onto someone else once married and end up divorced and ultimately, alone.

The whole marriage/baby thing is like some sort of social status materialism...people fetishize and covet these things but without being done right they're completely invaluable.

Ok, I'm suprised I'm writing this considering my generally apathetic feelings about weddings in particular and marriage in general (Maybe they'll change when I meet "The One"), BUT...

Shouldn't the wedding be a coming together of man and woman, and therefore be a blend of each's likes/dislikes/preferences/style? If the woman is planning the wedding without the participation of the other half (since the other half doesn't exist at this point) it seems more like "Party for me" than "Party for us" and that seems like a bad foot to step off with.

That said, as I said originally... I think I know like 6 people who would attend my wedding so I'd be fine with "big" or "drive-through" and leave most of the driving up to her preferences. But that's an affirmitive choice on my part. And I'm rambling now, so...

Lincoln-

a wedding can't be the coming together of a man and man or women and women???

This is the first time I'm reading your blog, so being the girl that loves to set everyone up with fiance's teammates and friends I'm going through them all in my head wondering who's still single. Anyways, I don't think she's pathetic. I think she's desperate and for a good reason. She's just taking desperate measures bc she has to and some guy is going to find that super sexy - probable the type of guy she'll be attracted to. I hope she meets a lucky man. And if she does I hope she still weighs the measure of their nuptials together to make sure they are really compatible. In the end, they'll have a hell of a story to tell their kids!

@ Lincoln-

Of course I was just kidding but buahahahahahahaha that was awesome. 2 points Lincoln.

I am so glad to have found your blog and post because I could not find this info when I Googled it last week and I knew I had heard the story on the news briefly one morning. It reminded me of David Weinlick, the guy who back in 1998 set a wedding date and then went campaigning and advertising for a wife and ended up marrying a virtual stranger at the Mall of America. They are, apparently, still married today with 3 or 4 kids. I always thought that made them both pretty wackadoodle and still do, but hey if it works for them and isn't hurting me.

That said, however, as a single woman I'm not sure I'd be willing to just set a date and make plans and then try to snag a man along the way. Strange that.

So this lady is doing Project Husband where I live in DFW, Texas. I saw it on the local news and read all about it on Facebook. I even watched several of her videos. I feel the same way as you. Do you think she will literally go through with the wedding without even knowing the man beforehand? Or not knowing him for very long... Is sounds kind of crazy to me but to each their own. The issue of these men not knowing is pretty unlikely if they live around here. They host public dating events and she even blogs for the local news channel. It's publicized pretty.

Oh my goodness! I watch the Today show every morning, so I can't believe I missed this. While I think it's great to be proactive, and believe in the power of positive thinking, I am afraid this girl may just scare away any guy who would even think about dating her. I mean, a guy doing that would scare me away! ...by the way, I am from Ohio too :)
